Chapter Nine

Kendall was having a hard time keeping her eyes off the little girl as Titus laid out the plan as well as what happened last week.

No one protested or demanded they leave. They simply nodded and darted glances in Kendall’s direction periodically.

“Do you know who the rogues worked with?” the male called Daxon asked.

“Which ones?”

“The ones who took her,” he said, nodding his head at Kendall.

Titus shook his head. “I’m not given that much information. All I know is they’re assholes who need to be put down and a location and approximate number of people.”

“How the hell did they know you were coming?” the guy, Aron, asked. He was different than the other three. He was clean cut and Kendall didn’t see a single tattoo or piercing where his clothes weren’t covering.

With a glance in Kendall’s direction, Titus shook his head. “I don’t know. The Council doesn’t know. And they used guns. They opened fire and sprayed bullets in wide sprays.”

“But they didn’t hit you,” Brax said.

“Something felt off. I could hear the other executioners moving in. That’s odd. Silence is key. And the scent was off. I hung back and waited. I survived.”

The two tattooed guys shared a look. The big one sitting next to the child scratched his bearded cheek with the back of his thumbnail.

“They used guns,” Daxon said, once again looking to the guy who resembled him close enough to be his brother.

“Humans use guns,” Brax said.

“We’ve used guns on occasion,” Campbell said.

“You use guns,” her mate said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders to pull her close. He pressed a kiss to her temple, then focused back on Titus.

“You guys carry them, too, though,” Campbell said.

“Yeah. But we only use them in emergencies. Shifters don’t tend to make enough noise to garner attention like that. A full barrage of bullets could have alerted any neighbors close enough to the attack. And they would call the police. Not the kind of shit we want,” Daxon said.

The more they talked, the faster Kendall’s heart pounded. She knew some of the details of what happened that night, but hadn’t considered how close Titus had come to being killed.

He could have been gone. He could have been out of her life.

And regardless of the short amount of time they’d spent together, the thought made her sick to her stomach and sent grief careening through her system.

“I know your Pride hunted rogues. I figured I could trust you to…”

“Watch over her? Does she not have any family? No home to return to?” Campbell asked.

“I have a home,” Kendall said, speaking up for herself.

Since the second they had walked into this place, she’d been discussed as though she weren’t sitting right there, as though she couldn’t speak for herself.

Campbell frowned at Titus in confusion.

“She’s staying with me until she wants to leave,” he answered.

“Then what are you asking?” Brax asked.

Titus looked across the table and locked eyes with Kendall. The fear she saw there almost broke her heart. Because she knew that fear was for her and not himself.
